 OVER A CENTURY OF HISTORY

What a long way from the 4000 ampere pot with its rotating cathode at the Froges plant in 1889 up to the G-line pots of 300 000 amperes.
• 1886   April 23rd, Paul Héroult applied for a patent for the industrial electrolysis of aluminium.

Paul Héroult registers the electrolysis process.

Electrolysis (Froges, 1889)

• 1893   Paul Héroult lays out the first aluminum production site in La Praz
• 1907   Saint Jean de Maurienne plant start up
• 1910   6 aluminum production units in the Maurienne valley
• 1979   F potline start up
• 1982   A potline shut down
• 1986   G potline, 7th generation of reduction cells (280 kA 305 kA in 2001)
• 1999   M98 rod mill
• 2003   G potline intensity increase at 313 333 A and 8 cells at 352 000 A
• 2004   New cell regulation system (Alpsys) and new wire rod machine (P02)
These innovations make Saint Jean de Maurienne, with a workforce nearly 700 strong, one of the most modern plants in its field today.
